NEWHALL

 

Built in 1959 to serve the area north of Los Angeles proper.  Office was remodeled in the 1980s.  Serves as a host switch for a few of the remotes in the region (Piru in Ventura).


NORTH HOLLYWOOD 01 "LANKERSHIM"

Type: Urban

Constructed in the 1910s by the Southern California Telephone Company to provide telephone service to the North Hollywood area.  Expanded over the years to and provided foreign exchange service to Van Nuys, Los Angeles and Burbank.  Became a dial office pre 1942.

Old Exchanges: POplar 4 & 5, TRiangle 5 (LA FX), CHase 7 & ROgers 7 (Burbank FX)

NORTH HOLLYWOOD 02 "MAGNOLIA"

 

Type: Urban

Constructed in the 1930s to relieve the North Hollywood 01 "Lankershim".

Old Exchanges: POplar 1,2,3, STanley 7 SUnset 1,2,3 and TRiangle 7 (LA FX)



NORTHRIDGE
Type: Urban

Constructed in the late 1950's by the Southern California Telephone Company to relieve Canoga Park and Reseda offices due to the large residential and commercial growth in the San Fernando Valley.  This office was located near the epicenter of the 1994 Northridge Earthquake and was heavily damaged by the quake including its north wall separating from the building and major damage to cable racks and switching modules within the building.  Although there were numerous calls blocked due to increase in post-earthquake call traffic the office remained available and processed calls even at a limited level.

PASADENA 11 "GREEN"

 

Constructed in the 1920's by Southern California Telephone Company.

Old Exchanges: SYcamore 2, 3, 5 and 6, GIbson 9, HIlltop 0, MUrray 1 and RYan 1

 

PASADENA 12 "LAKE"

 

Office built to replace the original Mt. Wilson office in Sierra Madre.

RESEDA

 

Type: Urban

Original Southern California Telephone office built in the 1930s.

ROSEMEAD

Office built in the early 1950s by Pacific Telegraph & Telephone to relieve the Alhambra and San Gabriel offices.

Original Southern California Telephone office which became dial pre-1944.

SAUGUS

 

Built in the 1960's to relieve Newhall.

SAN PEDRO

SAN PEDRO DOOR

 

Type: Urban

San Pedro was built by Southern California Telephone Company to provide service to the Los Angeles Harbor region.  The office went dial in 1945 and subsequently became the host office for the remote switch at Avalon on Santa Catalina Island about 25 miles off the coast.  Avalon was connected by both radio and coax cable.  Today San Pedro hosts Avalon through microwave (note tower) and fiber optic/coax undersea cable.

Old Exchanges: TErminal 1, 2 and 3 (Exchange was fitting as San Pedro is located right across from Terminal Island in the harbor)

Pacific Bell/SBC SHERMAN OAKS

AT&T SHERMAN OAKS

 

Type: Urban/Tandem

The original CO was the Van Nuys "Cedros" constructed by Pacific Telephone in the late 1940s to relieve the Van Nuys 02 CO.  AT&T added its "primary" office in 1959 and the entire complex (both Pacific Telephone and AT&T) changed to Sherman Oaks.  Pacific Telephone's building became a tandem office and all valley offices were homed to it. Microwave service once existed here (to Oat Mtn. and Mt. Gleason) but all signs of this has been removed. The office was connected by cable initially to Gardena, Alhambra, San Bernardino, LA 03 Madison Complex, San Diego and Ventura with later fiber connections to LA Madison Complex and Newhall.

SOLAMINT

 

Built in the mid 1970's to relieve Saugus and the eastern exchange area.

SOUTHGATE

 

Old Exchanges: LOrain 4, 6, 7 and 9

SOUTH PASADENA

 

Constructed in the 1930's to relieve the Pasadena 11 office.

TORRANCE

TORRANCE WALL

 

Type: Urban

Built by Southern California Telephone Company in the 1930s and became dial in 1950.  Wall at entrance facade shows inlaid "classic" bell system logos.

VAN NUYS
Type: Urban

Built in the early 1960's to relive North Hollywood 02, and provide telephone service to the growing San Fernando Valley.  Provide foreign exchange service to Los Angeles.

WEST LOS ANGELES "CENTURY CITY"

 

Type: Urban

Placed into service in 1967 to relieve Beverly Hills CO and serve the new "Century City" commercial development.  This was the first CO in Pacific Telephone territory to utilize the new Electronic Switching System equipment.

WILMINGTON

 

Type: Urban

Built in the early 1940s to relieve San Pedro.  became dial in 1945 and relieved the Compton office in the late 1950s in providing service to the Carson area. (Foreign Exchange)
