SAN PEDRO

Type: Urban
San Pedro was built by Southern California Telephone Company to provide service to the Los Angeles Harbor region. The office went dial in 1945 and subsequently became the host office for the remote switch at Avalon on Santa Catalina Island about 25 miles off the coast. Avalon was connected by both radio and coax cable. Today San Pedro hosts Avalon through microwave (note tower) and fiber optic/coax undersea cable. Pacific Bell/SBC SHERMAN OAKS
AT&T SHERMAN OAKS

Type: Urban/Tandem
The original CO was the Van Nuys "Cedros" constructed by Pacific Telephone in the late 1940s to relieve the Van Nuys 02 CO. AT&T added its "primary" office in 1959 and the entire complex (both Pacific Telephone and AT&T) changed to Sherman Oaks. Pacific Telephone's building became a tandem office and all valley offices were homed to it. Microwave service once existed here (to Oat Mtn. and Mt. Gleason) but all signs of this has been removed. The office was connected by cable initially to Gardena, Alhambra, San Bernardino, LA 03 Madison Complex, San Diego and Ventura with later fiber connections to LA Madison Complex and Newhall.
